End of 3rd layer...burnt umber underlayer
With one messy finger on the instructions and the other mixing colors, I made the 7 'grey' colors for the 'dead layer'. Hit a bump with the scraping, tho. Smeared an onion over the surface, linseed oiled it, buffed it, and then ra-ta-ta-ta...put a razor blade on it to get any brush hairs or rough areas. Too hard, and ended up getting some pigment. Oops. Forged on.
Match grey color to values on the umber...slowly and carefully.
Darkest areas first. Leaving some of the umber showing between strokes so you can tell where you are.
Here, I am still on the background.
Background corrected (another brush to remove excess paint) and blended smooth.
Flower blocked in with grey values
Then correcting, and blending. I took my time, and realized I did not want to blow it now.
THEN, worked on edges, pushing the background in and pulling some strokes out to make a more interesting shape
FINI!
Tomorrow I work at Poor Richard's Art (one of my 2 days for the month), so won't get to work on my 'lil French girls' until saturday. This one will have plenty of time to dry...and then the first colors!

Dead layer looks alive already! But it looks like you broke your 3 column! Ah well, I know you'll fix it in no time at all! Have fun at PRA! Too bad I can't just run over there and surprise you! ox

Love following your work on these, Vick. I am taking a week with David Leffel and just got his supply list- OHHH the darks! Not something a plein air painter is used to!

Oh I guess I had the fonts enlarged so it threw off the format. But I tend to do that with blog reading because my eyes are bad and I didn't have problem before.
I've been trying for an hour to get around to posting a comment, but I clicked on your link to Delmus, got interested in following him around, then came back and started watching your videos and FINALLY, here I am--just to say "what fun".
Diane, I'm smiling. Delmus has been coaching since I referenced him on my blog. If I wasn't such a promoter, I'd just let everyone think I figured all this out on my own!
I am all about fun. Am driven to maximize my painting abilities...and for me, that involves researching and trying new things.
OH, had a friend over tonight who said she'd break my painting arm if I touched the peony! I can't wait to put the color layers on, tho.

Thanks Theresa...Tim (Tyler) dropped by the other night. This painting was on a small easel and his eyes went straight for it when he entered the room. Good sign, I think.
