Stinker and a Cutie

Well, the Flemish paintings were not dry enough for the 'dead' layer. Kudos to me for not rushing them...by the time I get back to them (tomorrow is paint day at Tim's) they'll surely be dry. So I looked for something else to do with my day (plenty of non-painting stuff)...but I was set to PAINT.

I started this a week or so ago, and just couldn't get it. Warmed up with another session on it...figured I can take it to Tim for some rescue tips. It is a bit better, but definitely not 'done'.

First session. Pretty much all the same value, xcept for some darks. Doesn't look anything like a rainy day in Paris...

darkened the foreground a bit by glazing, which made the reflections some better.
Will let you know what Tim recommends.
Now for the fun. Yeah, I know it is difficult to wrap your brain around, but Vicki did something just for fun. Erika had sent me her photo she sent in for the challenge, and I thought it captured her so well I'd just see what I could do with it. So, without further ado, here is her photo.
and just below that is the end of the day painting. and just below that is a slideshow showing the progress over the afternoon.
drumroll please...da-da-da-DA...
oh, China Doll aka Erika doesn't know about this yet!

OMG it's ME!! W-w-wha? I've been drawn by Vicki Red Ross herself in her excellent pastel flair? Awwww that's outstanding! You'll have to show me some of your pastel portraiture techniques, I've watched you but you're so fast! You nailed me!

Good move on the rainy painting, what you did made a difference and accented the rainy day.

Love you Mz Artaholic! Gosh gimmie that energy my brain has been soaking in ice for two days.

Pastel? This one is OIL, babé!

Been waiting for you to see it...surprised, r'nt ya!

will see what Mr. Tim has to say about it tomorrow...and the rainy day one.

you are close...used a bit of Ann Templeton, Les DeMille and Tim Tyler. Guess that adds up to a Vicki Ross, huh?

I don't read, it does hit me as pastels so I guess I did pick up Templeton's influence LOL But I came back because, are you ready for this? Scott likes it! He likes it, Mikey likes it!

Wonderful and exact portrait of Erika!! I like the the street scene after the rework...the glowing colors you added really work! Has more of a rainy feel too it also. Keep up the wonderful work Vicki!

Wow Erika how special are you to be chosen to be painted by such a wonderful artist! Lovely portrait....subject and image!!!

Theresa, thanks...Tim and I decided the street scene needs to have the buildings glazed darker to contrast with all the chunky, bright light. And there is a funny shape in the lower right corner I will address.

Sheila, Erika IS special...my China Doll. She has tried to paint me before (as has Theresa and Leslie B. DeMille) and it seems it sometimes harder to paint someone you know. Especially someone like me who never has their mouth shut, or their eyes stable (as opposed to rolling around making a point).

Looked like a good face to practice on!

Vicki......I am so impressed! You did this in one day?!! You've got to do more portraits!

By the way, I want you to know I have a new appreciation for the portrait you painted of me. Last night I realized my computer screen was set on bright which was washing out a lot of colors making everything look overexposed. Now I can see the amazing colors and more detail of the portrait you did of me. I can't wait to see the real portrait in normal light.

Yeah, 3-4 hours. and I was just playing, no pressure. I took 10 days on yours (not every day of course) waiting for it to dry for another layer.

don't know if it is easier when you know someone or not, but I know Erika well. Both portraits were fun.

Julie! seems like yesterday to me when I had to bribe you with a free lunch to come over and tell me what (I was hoping nothing) I needed to do with my current group of paintings...you had a hard time, I'm sure, because I was so hoping I was good already!

And then I started working with Kippy in France, and things started changing by leaps and bounds!

Hello, there. I came to your blog via a comment left on mine, and I have enjoyed very much viewing your site, and your comment made me laugh. I look forward to learning more about you. The portrait is quite good, keep up the great work, you should be proud.

Hey, Tina! My blog is all about being an artist, the good-bad-ugly. And about fun!

My belief is that being an artist (not just a painter) is so intertwined with 'life', that you can't talk about one without the other...
