Victory with Peony Flemish Method pastel and oil

I really slowed down with this painting. Very much enjoyed the process and learned alot. I was supposed to use more of the damar/oil/turp on each layer and it would have had more of a glow, I think. I will definitely use this method again...it satisfied my niggledly/anal/OCD tendencies.

The oil painting looks richer. Might just be a fluke of photography...the slideshow for the oil version is below, the slideshow for the pastel version is here. The underpainting on the pastel was in acrylic and provided a great roadmap for complicated petals. Don't know if it was worth the effort or not, since pastel is opaque.

here is the slideshow for the oil:

The oil peony is quite stunning my dear! I think I might be ADD but since I don't have OCD I can't settle down to focus? I get so inspired I'm paralyzed especially around spring when the stimulation abounds!

Erika, thanks. It is hard for me to slow down enough for something like this. but it was worth it!

Vicki, these are stunning and I really enjoyed your slide shows. How many layers do you do with the oils? I don't suppose they have time to dry in between.

Vicki, I didn't realize these slide shows blow up...now I can see what you're doing...great demo! Thank you.

Vern, I abandoned the so-called Flemish method several layers ago! I could definitely use more study there. I really don't how many complete color layers I did, 3 or 4. And, yes, it was completely dry between each layer because they were thin. Each session was started with an onion slice rubbed over the surface (opens up the pores of the paint) and then oiled up with linseed oil. Next you scrape to remove brush hairs, bumps, etc. (I slacked on this a bit)...then remove excess oil with Viva and start painting!

this is the method I tried to follow...http://www.easy-oil-painting-techniques.org/oil-painting-tips.html

LOVE IT! Seeing it complete makes me happy. Of course, you know my favorites are the florals.

THANKS! I knew you would like this one.

Vicki!

You're right. The oil Peony is much richer. The colors are intense and some of the petals even appear to glow near the edges. Wow!

The pastel peony is much more subtle and soft.

Both look great though. It was very brave of you to do the same type of subject twice.

Thanks for sharing the different results!

TWICE! multiples help you 'see' the subject. I wonder if the oil is richer because of the warmer tones contrasting with the cooler.
